Overview

The CHCNAV RS7 is a handheld real-time 3D LiDAR SLAM scanner designed for fast reality capture in architectural surveying, interior measurement, renovation, underground spaces, public safety, heritage documentation, and other indoor and outdoor mapping applications. It combines high-precision inertial navigation, SLAM positioning, a 64-channel LiDAR scanner, GNSS, and high-resolution imaging in one portable system.

The RS7 captures up to 1.152 million points per second with a wide 360° × 189° field of view, allowing users to scan ceilings, walls, corners, stairwells, and surrounding geometry without repeatedly changing the scanner angle. CHCNAV specifies relative accuracy under 1 cm, repeatability under 2 cm, and absolute horizontal and vertical accuracy under 3 cm RMS under its stated test conditions.

With integrated GNSS, a 500 Hz IMU, high-capacity onboard storage, SmartGo field software, and CoPre processing workflows, the RS7 provides a streamlined way to capture and process georeferenced 3D data without relying on a stationary tripod-based scanner for every project.

High-Rate 64-Channel LiDAR

The RS7 uses a 64-channel LiDAR scanner designed to capture dense 3D geometry while the operator walks through the project area.

The scanner supports:

  • Single return: 576,000 points/sec
  • Dual return: 1,152,000 points/sec
  • 905 nm wavelength
  • Class 1 eye-safe laser
  • 40 m range at 10% reflectivity
  • 360° horizontal × 189° vertical field of view

The ultra-wide field of view helps capture walls, ceilings, floors, corners, and adjacent surfaces in a single pass, reducing the amount of manual repositioning normally associated with traditional stationary laser scanning.

Deep INS + SLAM Fusion

The RS7 combines LiDAR SLAM with high-precision inertial navigation to maintain a stable trajectory as the operator moves through the environment.

Its IMU operates at 500 Hz and has a gyroscope bias instability specified at 0.5°/hr, helping the system maintain reliable motion tracking in areas with limited geometric features, such as corridors, staircases, and repetitive interior environments.

CHCNAV specifically positions this deep INS + SLAM integration as a way to improve mapping reliability in feature-poor areas where a simpler handheld SLAM scanner may be more prone to drift.

Survey-Grade Accuracy

CHCNAV specifies the RS7 at:

  • Horizontal absolute accuracy: <3 cm RMS
  • Vertical absolute accuracy: <3 cm RMS
  • Relative accuracy: <1 cm
  • Repeatability: <2 cm

Absolute accuracy depends on the positioning workflow, GNSS conditions, control, trajectory quality, and processing method. CHCNAV’s specifications are based on its stated test conditions and should not be interpreted as guaranteed performance in every environment.

Integrated GNSS for Georeferenced Scanning

The RS7 includes integrated GNSS tracking for projects where absolute coordinates are required.

Supported satellite signals include:

  • GPS: L1, L2, L5
  • GLONASS: L1, L2
  • Galileo: E1, E5a, E5b
  • BeiDou: B1, B2, B3
  • QZSS: L1C/A, L1C, L2C, L5, L6

This allows the scanner to support RTK and PPK trajectory optimization, helping transform the point cloud from a local SLAM coordinate system into an absolute project coordinate system.

RTK, PPK, SLAM, and Control Point Workflows

The RS7 supports multiple positioning methods depending on the project.

RTK

When the scanner has a fixed RTK solution, CoPre can use the RTK trajectory to refine the point cloud and convert it to an absolute coordinate system.

PPK

When a static base station is available, CoPre can process the base data together with the RS7 trajectory to improve accuracy and create an absolute georeferenced point cloud. CHCNAV supports both cloud-base and self-established base-station workflows.

Pure SLAM

When GNSS is unavailable or absolute coordinates are not required, the RS7 can operate in a pure SLAM workflow and produce point clouds in a relative coordinate system.

Trajectory Control Points

Field-collected control points can also be used to correct the SLAM trajectory and transform the point cloud into a known coordinate system.

SmartGo Field Data Collection

The RS7 is operated through CHCNAV SmartGo, an Android data-acquisition application.

SmartGo provides:

  • Device connection and status monitoring
  • Real-time point cloud display
  • Project management
  • RTK / CORS settings
  • Control-point collection
  • Colored point cloud settings
  • Device diagnostics
  • Battery and storage monitoring
  • Live trajectory display
  • Scan start / stop controls

The application connects directly to the RS7 over Wi-Fi and can display the scanner trajectory and point cloud in real time while data is being collected.

One-Click Scanning

The RS7 also supports one-click collection directly from the smart handle.

After the scanner is powered on, the operator can initialize and start data collection using the handle button without continuously interacting with the phone interface. The same button can be used to end the scan and save the project.

This can simplify repetitive field scanning and allows the operator to concentrate on walking the planned survey route.

Note: One-click collection does not support logging into a CORS account during that workflow.

Real-Time Colored Point Clouds

The RS7 can use its integrated cameras to colorize point clouds during acquisition.

SmartGo allows the operator to:

  • Enable real-time colored point clouds
  • Capture imagery for later colorization
  • Monitor scan completeness
  • View elevation, intensity, mixed, or color rendering
  • Review the scan trajectory while collecting

This visual feedback helps reduce the chance of leaving gaps in the scan.

HD Imaging and Reality Capture

The RS7 incorporates two imaging cameras to supplement LiDAR geometry with color data.

CHCNAV’s current documentation lists:

  • 2 cameras
  • 1/2" sensor
  • Wide panoramic coverage
  • Imaging used for colorized point clouds and model generation

CHCNAV also promotes the RS7 for photorealistic outputs including colorized point clouds, mesh models, and 3D Gaussian Splatting.

CoPre Processing Software

RS7 data is processed using CHCNAV CoPre, CHCNAV’s 3D intelligent processing software.

CoPre supports:

  • SLAM trajectory processing
  • GNSS trajectory optimization
  • RTK optimization
  • PPK processing
  • Control-point adjustment
  • Point cloud generation
  • Point cloud refinement
  • Colorization
  • Denoising
  • Mesh modeling
  • 3DGS modeling
  • Coordinate system assignment
  • Point cloud export

CoPre can output:

  • Point clouds
  • Panoramic images
  • OSGB mesh models
  • OBJ mesh models
  • PLY 3DGS models

CoPre licensing may be sold separately depending on the selected package and required processing modules.

3D Gaussian Splatting

The RS7 supports 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) workflows through CHCNAV processing software.

3DGS combines captured imagery and geometry to create highly realistic scene representations that can be useful for:

  • Interior visualization
  • Building documentation
  • Cultural heritage
  • Renovation planning
  • Virtual site review
  • Digital-twin style presentation

CHCNAV states that 3DGS outputs provide more realistic visual effects than conventional mesh modeling while preserving geometric detail.

Wide-Ranging Applications

The RS7 is designed for portable scanning where speed and coverage are more important than stationary tripod scanning.

Typical applications include:

  • Architectural surveying
  • Interior measurement
  • As-built documentation
  • Renovation and remodeling
  • Floor plan capture
  • Underground spaces
  • Building facades
  • Stairwells and corridors
  • Public safety and forensic investigation
  • Cultural heritage documentation
  • Archaeology
  • Digital twins
  • 3D modeling
  • Point cloud generation
  • Construction progress documentation

CHCNAV specifically lists architectural surveying, interior design and renovation, public safety and forensic investigation, and cultural heritage among its target RS7 applications.

Compact Handheld Design

The RS7 is designed to remain easy to carry through buildings and job sites.

Specifications include:

  • Weight: Approximately 1.2 kg with battery handle
  • Dimensions: 118 × 90 × 304 mm
  • Integrated battery handle
  • Adjustable phone holder
  • 1/4" mounting interface

The smart handle supplies power while also providing the primary hand grip and one-click scan control.

Battery Life

The RS7 uses a 47.5 Wh battery integrated into the smart handle.

CHCNAV specifies:

  • Approx. 150 minutes operating time
  • Approx. 2 hours charging time from 0–100%
  • Typical power consumption: 16 W

Actual operating time varies with temperature, scanning mode, wireless communication, camera use, and battery condition.

512 GB Internal Storage

The RS7 includes 512 GB of onboard data storage, providing substantial capacity for large point cloud and image datasets.

Project data can be transferred to a computer through the USB Type-C data connection for processing in CoPre. CHCNAV recommends copying project data to the computer before processing rather than working directly from the scanner’s storage.

IP64 Environmental Protection

The RS7 carries an IP64 ingress-protection rating under IEC 60529.

This provides protection against dust and splashing water, but CHCNAV specifically cautions against operating the scanner in rain, snow, fog, strong wind, or dusty conditions due to both equipment protection and point-cloud quality considerations.

The operating temperature range is:

-20°C to +50°C (-4°F to +122°F).
