Description
Overview
The SECO 90551 Tri-Max Standard Screw Clamp Instrument Tripod is a surveying-grade fiberglass tripod designed for robotic and servo-driven total stations, 3D laser scanners, construction lasers, and other precision instruments.
The Tri-Max design is built to meet the ISO 12858-2-H standard directly out of the box and maintain dependable performance after years of field use. Its fiberglass legs, broad footbeds, internal leg-retaining system, and 65 lb equipment capacity provide the strength and stability needed for demanding surveying, scanning, and construction applications.
A 6-5/8-inch flat head with a large 2-5/8-inch center opening simplifies instrument mounting and setup over a survey point. Standard screw clamps provide secure, familiar leg adjustment, while the tripod extends to 71 inches and collapses to 44.5 inches for transportation.

Surveying-Grade Certified Accuracy
The Tri-Max is engineered for precision applications where tripod movement can affect instrument accuracy.
Its design meets the ISO 12858-2-H standard, making it appropriate for instruments that require a stable mounting platform during angular measurements, scanning, alignment, layout, and monitoring.
The tripod is particularly well suited for:
- Robotic total stations
- Servo-driven total stations
- 3D laser scanners
- Construction lasers
- Precision optical instruments
- Heavy surveying equipment
ISO 12858-2-H Performance
The SECO 90551 is designed to meet the ISO 12858-2-H standard immediately out of the box and continue providing dependable performance after extended field use.
This standard relates to the stability and performance requirements of surveying instrument tripods. A stable tripod helps reduce unwanted instrument movement caused by vibration, leg deflection, temperature changes, or uneven ground.
65 lb Equipment Capacity
The Tri-Max can support equipment weighing up to:
- 65 lb
- 30 kg
Its high load capacity accommodates heavier surveying and scanning instruments that may exceed the practical limits of lighter general-purpose tripods.
The tripod should always be positioned securely, and the instrument should be centered and properly fastened before use.
6-5/8-Inch Flat Head
The tripod features a 6-5/8-inch flat head that provides a broad mounting surface for compatible surveying and construction instruments.
The flat-head design supports common instrument configurations while providing room to position and secure the equipment during setup.
Large 2-5/8-Inch Center Opening
A large 2-5/8-inch center opening makes it easier to position the tripod over a control point, nail, monument, or other survey reference.
The wider opening provides improved visibility through an optical or laser plummet and allows additional room for shifting the tripod head during initial setup.
Standard Screw-Clamp Locks
The SECO 90551 uses traditional screw clamps to secure the tripod legs.
Screw clamps provide a familiar and dependable locking method for survey crews. Each leg can be adjusted independently and tightened once the correct height and position are established.
The clamps should be checked before mounting an instrument and periodically inspected during extended setups.
Fiberglass Tripod Legs
The tripod uses fiberglass legs for strength, stability, and durability in demanding field environments.
Fiberglass is commonly selected for precision instrument tripods because it provides a rigid supporting structure while offering different thermal and electrical properties than conventional metal tripod legs.
Proper safety practices should still be followed when working near electrical hazards or energized equipment.
Internal Leg-Retaining System
A built-in retaining system helps prevent the tripod legs from kicking outward on smooth or slick surfaces.
The retaining components are stored inside the tripod legs and can remain in place when the tripod is collapsed and not in use. This integrated design helps keep the system organized and available when needed.
The retaining system adds protection against accidental falls but does not replace proper tripod setup, inspection, or supervision.
Large Footbeds
Each tripod foot includes a large footbed that provides additional surface area for pressing the point firmly into the ground.
The foot shape is designed to support secure placement across a variety of terrain, including:
- Soil
- Gravel
- Compacted construction surfaces
- Uneven ground
- Pavement
- Sloped terrain
The operator should confirm that all three feet are planted securely before mounting the instrument.
Replaceable Tripod Points
Each foot is equipped with a replaceable point.
Replaceable points extend the usable life of the tripod by allowing worn or damaged ground-contact components to be serviced without replacing the complete leg assembly.
Safety-Strap Retention Loops
The tripod feet include retention loops for use with a compatible safety strap.
A safety strap can provide additional security in locations where equipment movement, slick surfaces, vibration, traffic, or environmental conditions could affect tripod stability.
Safety straps are sold separately unless otherwise specified.
Adjustable Working Height
The SECO 90551 provides the following specified height range:
- Extended height: 71 in (1.8 m)
- Collapsed length: 44.5 in (113 cm)
Its adjustable legs allow the tripod head to be positioned for different operators, instruments, terrain conditions, and line-of-sight requirements.
Ideal Applications
- Robotic total station surveying
- Servo-driven total station operation
- 3D laser scanning
- Construction laser setup
- Precision construction layout
- Monitoring surveys
- Machine and structural alignment
- Boundary surveying
- Topographic surveying
- Control-point measurements
- Engineering and industrial surveys
- Heavy instrument support
