Overview

The Sokkia GRX5 GNSS Receiver is a rugged, fully integrated RTK GNSS solution built for surveyors, construction professionals, and geospatial crews who need accurate positioning in demanding field conditions. With 448 hardware channels, modern constellation tracking, Sokkia Tilt Technology, 4G/LTE connectivity, optional UHF radio, long-range Bluetooth, USB-C charging, and an IP67-rated body, the GRX5 is designed to work as a dependable rover, network rover, or base-and-rover system.

The GRX5 supports GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, IRNSS/NavIC, QZSS, and SBAS signals, allowing it to track all visible supported satellite signals simultaneously. Its built-in interference monitoring and mitigation technology helps protect against GNSS jamming and spoofing, giving field crews better confidence in challenging signal environments.

Sokkia Tilt Technology

The GRX5 features Sokkia Tilt Technology, allowing users to measure points with the pole tilted up to 60°. This makes it easier to collect hard-to-reach points, work around obstacles, measure on steep slopes, and collect data in areas where keeping the pole perfectly plumb is difficult.

Unlike older tilt systems that require frequent calibration or are susceptible to magnetic interference, the GRX5 uses a calibration-free, magnetically immune IMU. This helps speed up fieldwork and reduces downtime caused by recalibration or unstable magnetic environments.

Tilt compensation is especially useful for:

  • Building corners
  • Fence lines
  • Utility features
  • Trees and obstructions
  • Slopes and uneven terrain
  • Road edges and curbs
  • Points near walls, traffic, or equipment
  • Locations where the rod cannot be held perfectly vertical

RTK, Network RTK, and Base/Rover Flexibility

The Sokkia GRX5 is designed for flexible GNSS workflows. It can be used as a network RTK rover with the integrated 4G/LTE modem, or as a private base-and-rover system when configured with UHF communication.

The optional internal UHF radio operates at 403–473 MHz with up to 1W of transmit power, providing crews with a practical radio-based correction option when cellular service is limited or a local base-station workflow is preferred.

This flexibility makes the GRX5 a strong fit for:

  • Boundary surveying
  • Construction staking
  • Topographic surveys
  • Site control
  • Utility mapping
  • Road and civil projects
  • Machine control support workflows
  • Network RTK rover work
  • Private base-and-rover setups

What Are OAF Licenses?

OAF stands for Option Authorization File. On Sokkia / Topcon GNSS receivers, an OAF is a license file that controls which receiver functions are enabled. Think of it as the software authorization that tells the GRX5 what features it is allowed to use.

Every GRX5 configuration includes the GRX5 Default OAF License. This default license activates the standard receiver functionality needed for the base receiver configuration. However, certain advanced capabilities may require an upgraded OAF depending on the selected package and workflow.

Available GRX5 OAF Options

  • GRX5 Default OAF License (p/n: 1075615-01)
Included with each GRX5 receiver configuration. This is the standard authorization file for the receiver and enables the base licensed functionality required for normal operation.
  • OAF-U, GRX5, Add Tilt (p/n: 1075617-01)
Adds tilt functionality to the GRX5. Select this option when you want to use the receiver’s IMU-based tilt compensation for measuring points without keeping the pole perfectly plumb.
  • OAF+, GRX5, All Signals Full RTK, 10 Hz (p/n: 1075616-01)
Unlocks the higher-level GNSS configuration for all-signal, full-RTK operation with up to 10 Hz update rate. This is the stronger option for users who want the most complete GRX5 RTK performance package.

OAF Package Notes

For standard rover use, the default OAF may be sufficient depending on your selected configuration. If you want tilt compensation, choose the Add Tilt OAF. If you want the most complete GNSS/RTK capability, choose the All Signals Full RTK, 10 Hz OAF.

For the All Signals Full RTK 10 Hz Base + Add Tilt Rover configuration, the package includes:

  • 2 × OAF+, GRX5, All Signals Full RTK, 10 Hz (p/n: 1075616-01)
  • 1 × OAF-U, GRX5, Add Tilt (p/n: 1075617-01)

This provides the upgraded all-signal full RTK licensing for both receivers in the base-and-rover setup.

All-Constellation GNSS Tracking

The GRX5 uses 448 hardware channels to track all visible supported satellite signals. By supporting GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, IRNSS/NavIC, QZSS, and SBAS, the receiver is built for strong satellite availability across a wide range of field conditions.

More tracked signals can help improve reliability in partially obstructed environments, urban areas, tree cover, and jobsites where satellite geometry may change throughout the day.

Signal Integrity, Anti-Jamming, and Anti-Spoofing

The GRX5 includes GNSS interference monitoring and mitigation technology to help protect the receiver from signal interference. This includes anti-jamming and anti-spoofing support, which can be important when operating in environments with radio noise, urban infrastructure, industrial sites, or other conditions where GNSS signal quality may be affected.

This helps improve confidence in the positioning data and supports cleaner field results.

Rugged Field-Ready Design

The GRX5 is built for daily survey use. Its magnesium alloy body is compact, watertight, and rugged enough for demanding jobsite conditions. The receiver is rated IP67 for dust and water protection, meets MIL-STD-810G vibration standards, and is designed to survive a 2 m drop from a pole onto concrete.

At only 995 g, the GRX5 is lightweight enough for comfortable rover work while still offering the durability expected from a professional GNSS receiver.

Topcon Field Software Compatibility

The GRX5 is compatible with Topcon Field, Topcon’s modern field software platform for GNSS and robotic total station workflows. Topcon Field gives crews a clear, graphical interface for collecting points, staking out designs, managing jobs, and controlling compatible Topcon and Sokkia positioning equipment.

With Topcon Field, users can perform common survey and construction layout tasks, including topo collection, point stakeout, linework, coding, coordinate system setup, and field data management. It is designed to help crews move quickly through everyday GNSS rover work while keeping the workflow simple and familiar across supported Topcon and Sokkia instruments.

For office workflows, collected GRX5 data can be exported for use in third-party CAD, survey, and construction software, depending on the project requirements and selected file formats.

Why Choose the Sokkia GRX5?

The Sokkia GRX5 is a strong choice for users who need a modern GNSS receiver with high-accuracy RTK, tilt measurement, UHF and cellular communication options, rugged construction, and flexible software compatibility. It is built for crews who want one receiver that can handle network rover work, private base-and-rover setups, topo, layout, control, and everyday survey tasks.

With all-constellation tracking, Sokkia Tilt Technology, integrated 4G/LTE, optional UHF radio, USB-C charging, and OAF-based upgrade options, the GRX5 can be configured to match a wide range of professional GNSS workflows.
