Description
Overview
The Leica Piper 100 and Piper 200 Pipe Lasers are compact, rugged line-and-grade lasers built for storm sewer, sanitary sewer, gravity-flow pipe, trench, manhole, and general underground utility applications. Their compact 96 mm diameter allows the Piper to fit inside pipes as small as 100 mm, or 4 inches, while the wide stable base also supports use in manholes and over-the-top setups.
Available with red or green laser beam options, the Leica Piper series provides a working range up to 200 m (650 ft), a grade range from -10% to +25%, and automatic self-leveling across a wide -15% to +30% range. The cast-aluminum housing and IPX8 waterproof rating make the Piper suitable for wet, dirty, and demanding construction environments.
Choose the Piper 100 for dependable manual line-and-grade setup, or select the Piper 200 for Leica Alignmaster automatic target acquisition, which helps the laser find the target during setup and repeat installations.

Available Models
Leica Piper 100
The Leica Piper 100 is designed for straightforward pipe-laser line and grade work. It provides the same compact housing, grade range, self-leveling capability, accuracy, waterproof construction, and working range as the Piper 200, but without the automatic targeting function.
Choose the Piper 100 for:
- Daily sewer and utility pipe installation
- Gravity-flow pipe alignment
- Trench and manhole work
- Crews that prefer manual target alignment
- A lower-cost Leica pipe laser without Alignmaster
Leica Piper 200
The Leica Piper 200 adds Leica Alignmaster automatic targeting. This patented system searches for and finds the target, helping crews establish line faster and return to an existing alignment during second-day setups.
Choose the Piper 200 for:
- Faster recurring pipe setups
- Long sewer and utility runs
- Projects where the laser is frequently repositioned
- Crews that want automatic target acquisition
- Higher-production underground pipe installation

The Piper 100 is the practical choice for standard line-and-grade work. The Piper 200 is better for crews that want quicker target acquisition and easier repeat setups.
Red Beam vs Green Beam
Both the Leica Piper 100 and Piper 200 have a maximum working range of up to 200 m (650 ft). This applies to both red- and green-beam models.
Red Beam
The red-beam Piper uses a 635 nm laser and is a strong choice for standard underground pipe work, shorter installations, and controlled-light environments.
Choose red beam for:
- Typical storm and sanitary sewer installations
- Enclosed pipe and manhole work
- Standard trench conditions
- Lower upfront equipment cost
Green Beam
The green-beam Piper uses a 520 nm laser and provides approximately four times better visibility than red. While the official maximum range remains 200 m (650 ft), the brighter green beam is easier to see over longer pipe runs, in large-diameter pipe, around water, and in bright job-site conditions.
Choose green beam for:
- Longer pipe runs
- Bright daytime conditions
- Water and wastewater applications
- Large-diameter pipes
- Crews that want easier target alignment and beam visibility

- Working range up to 200 m / 650 ft
- Grade range from -10% to +25%
- Self-leveling range from -15% to +30%
- Self-leveling accuracy of ±1.5 mm at 30 m
- Line movement of 6 m at 30 m
- Automatic grade compensation when rolled up to ±3°
- Up to 40 hours of battery operation
- Approximately 4-hour charging time
- IPX8 waterproof protection

- Available in red and high-visibility green beam versions
Automatic Grade Compensation
If the Piper housing is rolled by as much as ±3°, the instrument automatically compensates for the resulting grade error. This helps crews maintain the entered slope even when the laser cannot be placed perfectly level across the pipe invert.
Combined with the broad -15% to +30% self-leveling range, this allows the Piper to handle steep grades without manually tipping or shimming the instrument.
Wide Line and Grade Adjustment
The Piper provides a full 6 m of line movement at 30 m, or 20 ft at 100 ft. Operators can make fine-line corrections directly from the laser or via the optional remote control.
Grade can be entered with the arrow controls or through direct digit entry for faster changes. Line and grade lock functions help prevent accidental changes after setup is complete.
Built for Pipe, Trench, and Manhole Work
The Leica Piper can be used inside the pipe, above the trench, or directly in a manhole. Its compact housing fits into small pipes, while the wide base provides stability in tight inverts.
Ideal applications include:
- Storm sewer construction
- Sanitary sewer installation
- Gravity-flow pipelines
- Water and wastewater projects
- Drainage systems
- Underground utility installation
- Trench line and grade control
- Manhole-to-manhole alignment
An optional scope and mounting system can also be used for above-ground setups.
Rugged IPX8 Construction
The cast-aluminum housing is built to withstand rough underground construction conditions. The Piper is rated IPX8 for continuous water protection and uses a sealed construction designed for wet trenches, manholes, mud, and daily jobsite exposure.
The operating temperature range of -20°C to +50°C (-4°F to +122°F) supports year-round use in a wide variety of environments.
Long Battery Runtime
The included GEB221 rechargeable Li-Ion battery provides up to 40 hours of operation under suitable conditions. Charging takes approximately four hours with the included GKL311 charger and AC/DC adapter.
The Piper’s intelligent battery monitoring provides a clear charge indication so crews can better plan charging and avoid unexpected interruptions.
Optional IR Remote Functions
The optional IR remote lets crews control the Piper from outside the pipe or manhole. In addition to line adjustment, the remote provides access to several useful functions:
- Sleep mode to temporarily switch off the beam and conserve battery
- Strobe mode to improve beam visibility
- Illuminated pivot-point control
- Remote line positioning
- Additional setup and operating controls
The remote is especially useful on longer runs where repeatedly walking back to the laser would slow down production.
