Overview

The Carlson Washington Data Collector is a rugged, keyboard-equipped field controller designed for surveyors who want the reliability of a traditional data collector with the power and connectivity required by modern field software. Designed as a true field-ready controller, the Washington runs Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC and is built to run Carlson’s full-featured SurvPC software for GNSS, total station, and robotic surveying workflows.

For crews that loved the Carlson Surveyor 2, the Washington brings back the same practical field-first concept: a physical keyboard, compact handheld form factor, rugged build quality, and dependable instrument connectivity. Instead of relying only on a touchscreen tablet, the Washington gives surveyors a full numeric and QWERTY keypad with adjustable backlit keys, making it easier to enter point numbers, codes, descriptions, and commands in real jobsite conditions.

Whether connected to a robotic total station, GNSS receiver, or used with its optional internal survey-grade GNSS configuration, the Carlson Washington is designed to give field crews a fast, reliable, and familiar way to collect data, stake points, manage jobs, and work efficiently in demanding environments.

Built for Carlson SurvPC

The Washington is designed to run Carlson SurvPC, giving survey crews access to Carlson’s full field software environment on a rugged Windows controller. This makes it a practical choice for users who want a purpose-built data collector rather than a general consumer tablet.

With SurvPC, crews can run common field workflows such as:

  • GNSS rover data collection
  • Robotic total station control
  • Conventional total station work
  • Stakeout and construction layout
  • Topographic surveys
  • Coordinate geometry workflows
  • Point coding and linework
  • Job management and data export

The Washington is especially useful for crews already familiar with Carlson software who want to stay in the same workflow while upgrading to newer hardware.

A Modern Successor to the Carlson Surveyor 2

The Carlson Surveyor 2 was widely respected for its ruggedness, keyboard-driven design, and purpose-built nature for survey crews. The Washington follows that same idea, but with updated performance, storage, connectivity, and battery design.

The physical keypad is one of the biggest advantages. Touchscreens are useful, but many surveyors still prefer real keys for entering descriptions, point numbers, feature codes, offsets, and commands. The Washington’s full numeric and QWERTY keypad helps keep work moving when wearing gloves, working in the rain, or operating in bright sunlight.

This is not just a tablet with survey software installed. It is a field controller designed around how surveyors actually work.

Powerful Field Hardware

The Carlson Washington is powered by an Intel Atom x7-E3950 quad-core processor with 8 GB of DDR3L RAM, providing the performance needed for modern field software and active survey jobs. It includes both 32 GB eMMC flash storage and a 256 GB SSD, giving users room for jobs, data files, exports, PDFs, and project documents.

The 5-inch high-resolution display offers a compact yet usable screen for field maps, point lists, staking screens, and instrument controls. Its chemically toughened touchscreen is designed to handle rough field use while still supporting modern touch operation.

Long Battery Life with Hot-Swappable Power

Long survey days require dependable power. The Washington includes two long-life 49 Wh lithium batteries, with each battery providing up to 7 hours of use. The hot-swappable design allows the user to replace the external battery without shutting down the controller, helping prevent interruptions during active field work.

The unit also includes an internal 28.12 Wh battery, a battery charging dock, and an AC wall charger, making it easier to keep batteries charged and ready between jobs.

Instrument Connectivity

The Washington is built for communication with modern and legacy survey instruments. It includes USB-A, RS-232C 9-pin serial, Bluetooth 5.1, long-range Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, Wi-Fi 6, and a 4G cellular modem with worldwide frequency support.

This flexible connectivity makes the Washington useful for:

  • GNSS receivers
  • Robotic total stations
  • Conventional total stations
  • Carlson CRx & CRT robotic workflows
  • Carlson Viking and BRx7 GNSS workflows
  • Serial instrument connections
  • Network RTK and connected field workflows

Optional Internal Gama RTK GNSS

The Washington can be configured with Carlson’s Gama RTK Navigation engine, allowing survey-grade internal GNSS performance when paired with the required pole-mounted antenna. This optional configuration supports multi-frequency, multi-constellation GNSS and RTK positioning.

Listed GNSS capabilities include GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, and QZSS support, with RTK accuracy listed at 0.008 m + 1 ppm horizontal and 0.011 m + 1 ppm vertical under suitable conditions.

This gives users the option to configure the Washington as more than just a controller. With the proper GNSS option and antenna setup, it can become a compact RTK field solution.

Rugged Design for Demanding Field Conditions

The Carlson Washington is built for survey and construction environments. Its hardened plastic housing, shock-resistant design, shock-absorbing bumpers, IP65 waterproof and dustproof protection, and drop-tested construction make it suitable for everyday field use.

The controller is rated for operation from -4°F to 113°F and is designed to survive multiple 1 m drops onto concrete. This makes it a practical choice for crews working in construction zones, rough terrain, utility corridors, and changing weather conditions.
